WACS in the Philippines

Posted by Red on March 27, 2008

Have you ever done karaoke? In my short 29 years, I’ve never done it. That doesn’t mean that I’m against it, or that I would never consider doing it. I just haven’t been in an establishment that has both, a lot of alcohol and a karaoke machine. I don’t frequent bars, thus my chances of actually being able to sing off-key while in front of an audience has been quite slim. And I would never do it sober. Never. Ever.

So I was thinking of karaoke today. Yeah, my mind rambles that way when I’m waiting on the school bus.

And I was thinking of which song would be “my song” if I was able to drink enough alcohol and get my cute ass up on stage to belt out a few. The song instantly popped into my head, it’s perfect for me, it’s by one of my favoritest bands, and I know all the words (even while drunk) and it’s a song that I sing often anyhow . . .

Surrender“ .. Cheap Trick, baby. And once I was done singing, I’d probably be topless and staggering because that’s how I roll when I’ve been drinking heavily.

What would your karaoke song be?

I never have, and I would have to be drunk too, and my song would have to be “Margaritaville” by Jimmy Buffet. I love that song, but then doesn’t everybody? :)

Oh yes, good one .And that’d be an easy one too .. who doesn’t know the words to Margaritavillle?!

I have never sang karaoke and I would definitely have to put back a few shots first. But, if I ever do drag my “cute little butt”, as you put it, up on stage it would have to be a country song, probably something by the Judds, just because I can carry their tunes pretty well. :) One song specifically… “Give a Little Love”. I love the line “’cause mama didn’t raise no fool”. Ain’t that the truth!

I like that line too .. Cuz Mama didn’t raise no fool. Good one, good choice!

I do karaoke all the time, lady. My absolute favorite is “Honky Cat” by Elton John, but I’m also known to do a mean “Endless Love” by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie.

I like to do the Diana Ross part and get a big deisel dyke to do the Lionel Richie part. The same goes for “Islands in the Stream.”

Strangely, I often end up topless, too.

    Honky Cat, hell yes!
Can I be your Lionel Richie? I aint no big diesel dyke, but I can do it.. Im up for the challenge.
And yes, I can sooo see you ending up topless. Look out George Michael!

  8. Allison Says:

Hmmmm…..how about “I’m the one who wants to be with you” by Mister Big.

I’ve never done karaoke….I would certainly be tomatoed like Fozzy Bear if I did.

hahaa! Fozzzzy is the shit! And Im sure you wouldn’t be tomatoed. If you were liquored up enough, you wouldn’t feel it anyhow.

  9. betme Says:

There would have be large piles of money involved and plenty of liquor and then I might be persuaded to belt out some “Hurts So Good” by Mellencamp ;)

Money? Are you gonna strip too?! :)
    That’s some good tunes, there!

last time I had a turn I did “Angel Eyes”, made famous by the Jeff Healy band, written by John Hiatt.
But I’ve been tanked enough to do it a bunch of times.

Why is it that I can’t picture you doing “Angel Eyes”, though a very good song. I cant see you, a big .. burly man doing it.

Pour some sugar on me by Def Leppard or…..Enid by the Barenaked Ladies. Best song EVER.

Or if I felt like being a douchebag, I’d break out the ballads, a la Whitney or Celine. Ohhhhh yeah. I’d mock them like they’ve never been mocked before! Which would be quite intense, since their purposes on this earth are to be gigantic mockees.

If I Had a Million Dollars is my fav from the BNLadies…
But you, Talea? A mocker? nooo, say it ain’t so! :) You wouldn’t dare make fun!

I’ve done “war Pigs” by Sabbath (hard to find)
I do a good elvis (the old, fat elvis with the cheesy kung fu moves sans spandex)
and some by ‘ol blue eyes
not in a long time though

WarPigs. Im not surprised. Damn good tunes, MrOzzzzzy.
Can we get a video of you doing the cheezy kung fu Elvis moves? I think they’d go over well.

I met my husband in a bowling alley that had a karaoke bar. For a year I got incredibly drunk so I could sing and try to make him notice me. It worked! I believe one of the songs I remember singing was “Takin’ Care of Business” by BTO. But I freaking L-O-V-E Cheap Trick. I think that might have been the first concert I ever went to. Karaoke is very fun. You should definitely try it. And please video, then post, due to your description . . .

hahaha ,you got him by doing that .. that’s funny. Do yall still karaoke at the bowling alley?
You’ve seen Cheap Trick. Im jealous. Oh so very jealous. :|
And a video too? hahahaaa, perhaps. Though there are drunk, topless pictures of me floating around the internet already :)

  16. Alyson Says:

I don’t think I could get that drunk, but if I did, I would probably have to try my hand at some Bon Jovi, although I would hate to butcher the work of my favorite artist……….

I saw Cheap Trick once. They opened for Motley Crue a few (okay 11) years ago.

Bon Jovi? No way. Not you. That’s just wrong ;)
Cheap Trick AND the Crue … lucky girl. You stinker!

  17. anonymum Says:

The one and only time I got drunk enough (thanks Jose) to do karaoke I did a god awful rendition of Janis Joplin’s Mercedes Benz. Luckily I was drunk enough that in my own head I sounded like I could have been Janis.

Cool, Janis fucking rocks. Im sure you did her justice.

  19. joebecca Says:

You may not know this, but I LOVE karaoke! I have lots of songs, but my faves are Gold Dust Woman by Fleetwood Mac and Here For The Party by Gretchen Wilson. I rock those songs at least once every couple weeks!

Yes, I do know that you love karaoke, and i think that’s fucking awesome .. you have the balls to do it, cuz you’re cool like dat.

  21. Lumpy Says:

I have only done it once, at my brother’s wedding. I had discovered amaretto stone sours that night. I walked up to the DJ and picked out a Dixie Chick song and got my groove on. I rocked the house. I love to sing and think I’m pretty darn good *but would never have the nerve to sing in front of a crowd - the booze took over and wah-lah “LUMPY’s IN DA HAUSE”. But, if I had to do it again (I’m sure the day will come) I’d pick Gladys Knight & the Pips “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination” - cuz’ I’d BRING IT.

hahaha! Now see, I could totally see you up there doing it .. booze or not, I could see Lumpy singing her little heart out.
We must go out and do it. Soon.

  22. Lumpy Says:

P.S. *sniffle* Thank you for missing me. It warmed my heart! You are the best, Red. I just adore you!

Aww, no problem, my dearest Lumpy Lump!
    It’s a bit quiet when you’re not around :)

Yes, the Doors is better! I bet you’re great at it.

  24. Luke Says:

One drunken night, it was “Dead Or Alive” by Bon Jovi, a performance that got me a standing ovation in a Kissimmee, Florida bar! The only other time I can remember, was at a bar with my friend Jef who likes to rap. We did a Linkin Park song.

Oooh, Rappin’ karaoke .. niiiice. I would do “Wild Thing” by Tone Loc.
    Red

  25. Alyson Says:

Ohhhhh….Bon Jovi, one more reason to like Luke (besides the fact that his stories on his blog are hilarious)

Wild Thing……..LOL……..I haven’t thought about that song in years.

And, just in case you need another reason to envy the Cheap Trick/Crue show…….I got my tickets for free. I won them off the radio. The seats SUCKED though.

For free, huh. You stink! the seats mighta sucked, but you were there!! :|
Yeah, I like Luke’s stories too!

My god, I LOVE to karaoke. You need to go to a dive bar to practice. It is the best feeling in the world to be brave enough and sing in front of a bunch of drunks. Do it!!! My signature karoke song is “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Love it, it’s hard, it’s 80’s, and I’ve gotta say that Carly from American Idol messed up 3 times when she sang it Tuesday night and I’m just a tinsy bit mad at her for f-in up my song, esp. since she is my favorite!

Good song, GhettoGirl! I could do that one, too.
I’l have to give it a try sometime.

  27. ~m Says:

Being a musician, I can’t even go there.
But my dream is to walk into a club doing Karaoke and sing “When a man loves a woman”, rip it up, and walk out because I don’t really give a sweet shit that I nailed it as people go “who the fuck was that?”
That’s the musician in me I guess. ;)
    ~m

Okay, I’ve GOT to hear you sing. I know you’ve got a CD floating around, yes?
How would I go about getting my hands on one? I’ll email ya.

  28. moonbeammcqueen Says:

Love this post, and the comments. If it were possible to gauge the point where I could drink enough alcohol without dying, yet still be able to sing without embarrassment, some of the tunes that I wouldn’t remember singing would be:

“You Really Got a Hold on Me” - Smokey Robinson

“You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin” - The Righteous Brothers

    “Alison” - Elvis Costello

“Me and Bobby McGee” - Janis Joplin

It would also be fun to just jump around and do some Ramones. “Blitzkreig Bop” maybe. But then I’d throw up and it would all be over.

Great list, McQueenie! I think you’d do them well! Especially the Ramones .. gotta love the Ramones.
